In early 2000, Kurt Cobain's "Horror Movies" began to circulate around the Nirvana trading community. The original video is contains footage of Nirvana and the Melvins, and parts of this footage remain uncirculated.
The first version of the "Horror Movies" to surface in early 2000 is plagued with tracking problems. Several months after this became available, a higher quality version appeared, free of these issues.
The current copy originates from "MC Satanic" Scotty Hile, who supposedly obtained this recording from either Krist Novoselic or Dale Crover. Having grown up with them, he had no problem obtaining a copy, but the actual date of him acquiring it is unknown.
In 1995, a man named Brian McConnell met Scotty Hile's roomate. Eventually he hung out with Hile and attained a copy of the tape (the poorly recorded version). In the summer of 1999, McConnell sold a copy of an unsurfaced Nirvana recording that took place on January 23, 1988 (for a ridiculous amount of money) to John Etter, Mike Ziegler, and Frank Norris of LiveNirvana.com. Tacked on the end was the poor quality "Horror Movies" version. In February of 2000, McConnell went back to Hile's roomate and asked for his copy of the tape (first generation, straight from Novoselic's master), finally obtaining the one free of tracking errors.
This is a brief interview about the Horror Movies between Nirvana archivist Mike Ziegler and Dale Crover (ex-Nirvana and current Melvins drummer):
Mike - Do you happen to remember what the title of the movie was called? I've heard rumors from people that Kurtsaid the movie was titled "Kurt's Bloody Suicide."
Dale - I'm sure that there was no title. We were just fucking around with a camera.
Mike - So... what the hell is up with the Mr. T scene in the beginning. Who's crazy mind thought that one up ;-) ?
Dale - The Mr. T Idea just developed as we shot it. Krist filmed while I held the lights. Kurt made the satanic altar and played Mr. T. I think I manned the vacuum cleaner for the coke snorting scene. We were going to do more but never finished.
Mike - What did you use to record it?
Dale - Novoselic's super 8.
The (aproximately) 10 min. "Horror Movies" video was recorded in 1984 by Kurt Cobain, Dale Crover, and Krist Novoselic on the streets of their hometown, Aberdeen, WA. The three friends (and possibly more) filmed a slew of seemingly random events, and the video switches from scene to sceneso quickly, that it's hard to map out the exact content of this 10 min. video, but the following is a list of just some of what you will find in this video montage:
The first shot is of a turtle crawling around, followed by a bloody hand
Kurt Dressed in a Mr. T Mask, worshiping a pentagram, and snorting a lot of (fake) cocaine
Statue of Virgin Mary (?) which later appears on a concert poster (Come As You Are, page 83)
Kurt's claymation (quality on this part of the video is not very good)
Kurt washing a wall
Images if a strange fat man
Kurt jumping around with an electric guitar
Kurt cutting his throat and wrist with fake knife
A dog being stabbed with a fake knife.
Kurt getting shot with a fake gun. Interesting pyrotechnic effect that causes stage blood to spray everywhere.
A masked man cutting somebody'sthroat
A picture of somebody masturbating to people passing on the street.
A black dog running down a street
An unseen killer stalks a teenager. Comes up on him with a knife, and slices his arm open
Clips of this video montage appear briefly on a NIRVANA tribute aired during the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards. It should also be noted that although none of these scenes have any sound, the version of this collage that came directly from Dale Crover, has Melvins songs dubbed in the background.
NOTE: One of the masks used in the "Horror Movies" is the same mask that Kurt is tossing around at the end of the "Sliver" music video, filmed something like 8 and a half years later. Kurt may have found it in his garage as they were filming the video there. Also, there are short clips of Matt Lukin and Dale Crover's mother in the video.
